Where can you get a hot meal in Avondale at 10:45 on a Tuesday night? A year ago that was harder to answer. Now there's an Airstream on a patio on 5th Avenue South that cooks until 11:30. Over the past four months, each of the neighborhood's newest openings has settled into its own part of the day. Lunch, happy hour and late night now belong to different addresses a few blocks apart. When you go out matters more than where.
Weekday lunch belongs to 3rd Court South
The newest kitchen in the neighborhood is Taiwan Street Food, which Bham Now reported opened on Monday, October 5, 2026. It sits in the former Lag's Eatery space at 4350 3rd Ct. S, just off Crestwood Boulevard, next to Gatos & Beans and near Cahaba Brewery. The owner is Stephen Kao, who also owns Christopher House Antiques. He runs it as an open-kitchen diner built around stir fry, noodle soups and appetizers.
The menu Bham Now listed is short:
- Beef Noodle Soup
- Crispy Chicken with rice
- Stir Fry Shrimp and Vegetables with rice
- Dumpling soup
- Potstickers
- Edamame
The hours matter most here. During its soft opening, Taiwan Street Food serves Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and is closed Saturday and Sunday. Bham Now's October 12 roundup listed the same weekday schedule a week later. So the newest restaurant in Avondale is a weekday place for now. Soft-opening hours often change, but as of mid-October a Saturday plan built around those potstickers would end at a locked door. Bham Now also noted that the patio is in full use now that the weather has cooled, which suits a November lunch break.
Up on 41st Street, SAW's Soul Kitchen at 215 41st St. S covers almost the same window, but with Saturday added. SAW's lists it as open for dine-in and curbside pickup Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On weekdays, the two kitchens give you two 11-to-8 options a few blocks apart. Taiwan Street Food closes for the weekend, so SAW's handles Saturday lunch alone.
At 4 p.m., the action moves to 5th Avenue South
The afternoon shift starts on 5th Avenue South. Lucky Stranger opened on July 24, 2026, at 4036 5th Ave. S, in the former Parkside on Fifth space. Bham Now's opening preview says the building dates to 1902 and once housed a marble works. The four co-owners are Ali Randall, José de Jesus Medina Camacho, Kelsey Drum and Nan Wagner. Between them they've worked at Juniper, Salud Taqueria and Adiõs.
The drinks are kept simple on purpose. Medina Camacho told Bham Now, "We want everything to be affordable—the craziest things we'll have are frozen martinis and seasonally rotating frozen drinks like bushwackers and frozen margaritas." The bar posts a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. every day. That makes it the easy next stop for anyone leaving the 3rd Court lunch crowd behind.
When it opened, Lucky Stranger announced bar hours running past midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Hours can shift after opening, so check @luckystrangerbham on Instagram before you plan around a closing time.
Late night now has its own kitchen
A vintage Airstream on Lucky Stranger's shaded patio, the same trailer hotbox once cooked from, is now home to Closers. This late-night food spot is run with Lee Pantazis, owner of Gus's Hot Dogs, a Birmingham spot that dates back to 1947. As Pantazis put it to Bham Now, "we're gonna make food that people want to eat, at a place they want to drink, with people they want to hang out with." Before opening, Pantazis said the Airstream would serve burgers, chicken sandwiches, wings and fries. By fall, the dishes getting named were a chicken tender tower, a hot dog flight, the Dog Pile and Disco Fries. Menus change, so check with Closers before you order.
Closers' own site lists its hours separately from the bar's:
- Monday through Thursday, 4:30 to 11:30 p.m.
- Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
- Saturday, noon to 12:30 a.m.
- Sunday, 4:30 to 11:30 p.m.
Those hours pick up where the 3rd Court and 41st Street kitchens leave off. SAW's and Taiwan Street Food both close at 8 p.m. Closers keeps cooking more than three hours later on weeknights and past midnight at the end of the week.
The whole week on one grid
Put the four schedules side by side and you can see who covers which part of the day.
| Spot | Address | Mon–Thu | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan Street Food | 4350 3rd Ct. S | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Closed | Closed |
| SAW's Soul Kitchen | 215 41st St. S | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Not listed |
| Lucky Stranger | 4036 5th Ave. S | Happy hour 4 to 6 p.m. | Happy hour 4 to 6 p.m. | Happy hour 4 to 6 p.m. | Happy hour 4 to 6 p.m. |
| Closers | 4036 5th Ave. S, patio | 4:30 to 11:30 p.m. | 4:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. | Noon to 12:30 a.m. | 4:30 to 11:30 p.m. |
Taiwan Street Food's hours are its soft-opening schedule as of October 2026. SAW's lists Monday through Saturday only.
Two things stand out on the grid. Saturday afternoon is the busiest stretch, with SAW's serving until 8 and Closers opening at noon. Sunday is the thinnest. Neither daytime kitchen lists Sunday hours. On 5th Avenue South, Lucky Stranger's happy hour starts at 4 and the Closers window opens at 4:30. A Sunday lunch plan built around the newest openings won't work this fall.
Weekends run on Avondale Brewing's calendar
The weekend gap in the restaurant hours is where 41st Street's best-known address comes in. Avondale Brewing Company at 201 41st St. S, and The Upstairs at Avondale at 201B, have a full calendar for the rest of the fall. Here's what's still ahead as of this week, per the brewery's calendar:
- Saturday, November 7: Scattrbrain at The Upstairs at Avondale, 7 to 10 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 11: Feng E at The Upstairs, 7 to 10 p.m.
- Saturday, November 21: Stephen Wilson Jr. with Kashus Culpepper, 6:30 to 10 p.m. The calendar marks this one sold out.
- Thursday, December 3: Davis Little Trio with Ryan Brown + 4 at The Upstairs, 8 to 10 p.m.
- Saturday, December 12: The annual outdoor Avondale holiday market, 1 to 5 p.m.
The holiday market fits the weekend pattern well. The brewery describes local vendors for last-minute shopping, specialty cocktails and activities for kids. It also promises a pet-friendly Santa ready for photos, so bring the dog. It falls on a Saturday, so SAW's is open until 8 and Closers starts at noon. Lunch and a late bite are both covered within walking distance. Taiwan Street Food won't be part of that afternoon unless its weekend hours change.
The Wednesday Feng E show and the Thursday Davis Little Trio set are worth checking twice. On those nights you can eat at Taiwan Street Food or SAW's before 8, catch a show Upstairs, and still make it to the Closers window afterward.
The 3rd Avenue South building is still dark
There's still one gap on the map. Joyland closed its Avondale location at 3719 3rd Ave. S after service on Sunday, August 2, 2026, after two years. Bham Now described it as a concept from Sean Brock, Pihakis Restaurant Group and Southall Farm. It operated in the building many longtime residents still associate with Bottletree Café and later Rodney Scott's BBQ. No successor tenant or plan for the building has been announced since.
A separate project has been proposed a few blocks away. AL.com reported in May 2026 that a lounge-and-grill called Retro was planned for 430 41st St. S, Unit A. At the time of that report, no opening date had been announced. For now, it's an announcement without a date. If it opens, it will be the next test of which part of the day Avondale still has room for.
Until then, a November day in Avondale has a clear rhythm. Weekday lunch is on 3rd Court South, happy hour starts at 4 on 5th Avenue South, the Airstream window stays open until 11:30, and weekend afternoons take you to 41st Street.
Keeping track of which kitchen is open at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday is part of knowing your neighborhood, and that kind of detail also shapes what a home here is worth to the next buyer.
